A lot of research in computer science is carried out in the field of distributed systems and computer networks. Topics being adressed include the development of new and improved protocols, applications, architectures, security- and quality-of-service-techniques, just to name a few. All of these topics share the fact that they heavliy rely on network simulation as an analysis and evaluation tool. As every simulation is tight to a model that represents the real world, modeling itself is a crucial step towards meaningful results. Nowadadys, inconsistent modeling leads to a poor comparability of results and raises many questions in the research community. Systematic modeling, on the other hand, of computer networks has been quite neglected so far, and this GI dagstuhl research seminar focusses on this topic.
We aim at systematic modeling techniques in order to increase the quality and validity of results in the computer networking domain by providing a set of methods, tools and best practices.
