Contents
This lecture gives a compact overview on concepts and techniques for designing and deploying massively distributed systems.
The course will focus on two kinds of massively distributed systems: (1) Peer-to-Peer systems and applications and (2) sensor networks.
Topics of the course:
- Characteristics, challenges and reasons of/for massively distributed systems
- Examples and design principles of massively distributed systems
- Peer-to-Peer systems and applications
- Basics of Peer-to-Peer Networking: Motivation, characteristics, challenges, goals
- Unstructured Peer-to-Peer systems, e.g. Gnutella, FreeNet, etc.
- Structured Peer-to-Peer systems, mainly the concept of distributed hash tables (Chord, CAN, Pastry)
- Peer-to-Peer applications, like end-system-based multicast, distributed file systems, instant messaging, P2P-VoIP, etc.
- Sensor networks
- Application scenarios
- Design of sensor nodes
- Architecture of sensor networks
- Challenges in sensor networks
- Energy-aware MAC & link layer
- Naming & addressing
- Clock synchronization
- Localization and positioning
- Topology control & Routing protocols

Remark: This course is a compact introduction into massively distributed systems. In the following terms, beginning with winter term 2006/07, there will be separate courses on (1) Peer-to-Peer systems & applications (V3Ü1) and (2) sensor networks (V3Ü1). Nevertheless, this course can be combined with other courses from the networking and distributed systems area for an oral exam in applied computer science.
